It is for the first time that the corporate world in the Indian water sector comprising of 30 major leading companies has stepped forward to lay down drinking water standards. NSF International (NSF), a not-for-profit international organization located in the US is a key participant in the task force. It has entrusted with the task of developing worldwide standards for Drinking Water Treatment Units (DWTU) for the assistance of member companies. The challenge of training service professionals on the supplier side for microbiological treatment of water was one of main areas of concern for the group. According to the Education Sub Committee there is a need to develop affordable and accessible educational and professional certification programme for the Indian market. H Subramaniam, Chairperson of the Education Sub Committee, said, “The industry needs to recognize certification by giving its weight age in new recruitments as well as with existing employees”. Products would achieve quality certification by WQA after essential tests under variable testing conditions. The standards would be formulated and submitted to Bureau of Indian Standards which would ultimately roll out the standards which would become mandatory for manufacturers of water purifiers to adhere to.
