EverythingAboutWater is pleased to announce a specialized Training Program on Water Treatment Plant Design & Troubleshooting, scheduled to be held during the Water Show on 25th & 26th September 2026.

This intensive two-day program is designed to provide practical knowledge and technical insights into evaluating existing water treatment systems, improving plant performance, designing advanced treatment systems, and implementing effective troubleshooting and preventive maintenance strategies.

Programme Features

The training is structured progressively from fundamentals to advanced water treatment design:

  • Fundamentals: Water chemistry of brackish and seawater, key terminology, and its impact on the selection of water treatment equipment.
  • Intermediate Level: Design calculations for clarification, filtration, and softening systems.
  • Advanced Level: Modern membrane technology, including design calculations for Ultrafiltration (UF) and Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems for high-purity water production.
  • Troubleshooting & Maintenance: Practical approaches to troubleshooting and preventive maintenance of WTP equipment.
  • CAPEX & OPEX: Understanding capital expenditure and operating expenditure associated with water treatment plants.

Day 1 – 25 September 2026

Water Chemistry, Conventional Treatment & Equipment Design

  • What is water? Sources and characteristics of water
  • Physical, biological and chemical impurities in water
  • Water analysis and interpretation of analytical results
  • Understanding mg/L and ppm, including mg/L as CaCO₃ – with exercises
  • Brackish and saline water, pH measurement, and its relationship with alkalinity and acidity – with exercises
  • pH and alkalinity relationships; P-Alkalinity and M-Alkalinity
  • Relationship between alkalinity and hardness
  • Temporary and permanent hardness
  • Relationship between hardness and Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)
  • Coagulation and flocculation of raw water
  • Equipment required for settling and clarification of water
  • Design of sand filters and significance of sand under-bed layering
  • Design of activated carbon filters and under-bed layering
  • Significance of activated carbon iodine value and adsorption capacity
  • Design of ion exchange softeners using resins – with a solved example

  • Introduction to membrane technology
  • Development of membrane technology and its importance in the water treatment industry
  • Membrane technology versus particle-size spectrum
  • Microfiltration, Ultrafiltration, Nanofiltration and Hyperfiltration
  • Membrane materials and Reverse Osmosis membrane configurations
  • Modern RO membrane materials
  • Osmosis and Reverse Osmosis explained
  • Ultrafiltration membrane configurations: Inside-to-Out and Outside-to-In
  • Cross-flow versus dead-end filtration
  • Flux, membrane area and their impact on membrane system design
  • UF plant design
  • Reverse Osmosis plant design
  • Understanding Beta Factor, SDI, LSI, membrane flux and membrane area
  • Salt passage and membrane rejection
  • Benchmark performance and comparison for RO plant performance deviation studies

About the Trainer

Mr. Sunil Patkar, Chemical Engineer, Mumbai, India, and a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), New York, USA, has extensive experience in the design and application of water treatment processes.

With 36 years of experience in the field of water treatment, Mr. Patkar works as a Water Treatment Consultant and WTP Design Instructor for various Indian and international companies.

His professional experience includes a peer engineering review assignment for a 2.5 MLD Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) project at Infosys, Bengaluru, as well as conducting water treatment design instruction programmes in Abu Dhabi through TUV NORD Academia.

He is currently associated with educational and industrial organisations for water treatment plant design training and conducts WTP design programmes through AWARENESS Solutions, New Delhi, and international organisations including AMABHUBESI in South Africa.
